When my oldest son was about 4, I spent an afternoon either him making apple “donuts” as a special snack. It was the simplest little snack that took just a few minutes to put together, but it’s been four years since that day and he still talks about that snack on the regular.

I guess it was a hit?!

So, recently when he had a play date with some friends I decided it was the perfect time to do it again. I snapped a few photos to share the process, because it’s the quickest, easiest, and (apparently) most impressive snack around.

A cute fall craft idea - apple slice donuts

Apple Slice “Donuts”

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • Apples (any variety is great)
  • An apple corer – or a 1/4 teaspoon measuring spoon!
  • Various spreads like peanut butter, cookie butter, and nutella
  • A variety of toppings (mini chocolate chips, nuts, sprinkles, etc).

This is one of those “recipes” without a ton of actual ingredients. All you really need are apples, some sort of spread, and a topping! You can play around with a ton of different combinations, and there’s no right or wrong way to do it.

Ingredients for apple slice donuts

Step One: Slice Apples + Make a Hole

Start by slicing the apples into thin slices, with the core in the middle of them. Be careful not to slice them too thinly, or else they won’t be able to handle the toppings!

If you have an apple corer, you can core it ahead of time. I don’t have one, so I just used a 1/4 tsp measuring spoon to scoop out the middle. It worked perfectly and created the cutest little donut shape!

Step Two: Get Creating!

After your apples are sliced, you’re ready to get creative with the toppings! I like to set them all out and let the kids go to town. It will get messy and they will go overboard. It won’t look anything like the cute little apple donuts you’ve seen on Pinterest. Just let it go and embrace it.

A few combination ideas to get you started:

  • Nutella + rainbow sprinkles
  • Cookie butter + mini chocolate chips
  • Peanut butter + chopped pecans

There’s no limit to what you try out or how you combine it! I had a blast watching the kids play around with various toppings and figure out what they liked. The cookie butter was the hardest to spread on the apples, but it was my personal favorite. The kids, of course, loved the Nutella.

If you’re looking for a super easy after school activity to do with your kids that’s sure to impress them, this is the perfect one! We had a ton of fun with it, and I know they’ll remember it a long time.

  1. This was also in a very recent High Five magazine (Highlights mag for the younger crowd). My five-year-old wants to make these and this might be the perfect push I needed.
