Ready to learn one of my favorite Texas cocktails? Here’s a simple – and DELICIOUS – ranch water recipe that is sure to become your favorite drink of the spring and summer.

I’ll admit, before I started prepping to write this post I didn’t realize that Ranch Water was a Texas thing.

But, this fizzy, refreshing, tequila-lime drink is one of the best cocktails around and I don’t really think it’s fair to just keep it to us Texans, so I’m sharing it with you today.

What is Ranch Water?

Ranch water is a really light and refreshing cocktail that consists of nothing but tequila, lime, and a sparkling water. It’s perfect for spring and summer!

You can use any brand out there, but I personally prefer Topo Chico mineral water! It’s got the exact right amount of crispness and the flavor combines really well with the tequila. I also highly recommend fresh lime juice – if you want to use bottled you can, but fresh lime slices make all the difference!

It’s really easy to make and it’s light on calories compared to just about any other tequila-focused drink. Also, it’s so delicious! I would compare it a bit to a margarita, but it obviously has the carbonation from the soda water, so that adds a fresh spin on it.

Where did Ranch Water come from?

I did a little digging and learned that this drink supposedly originated in West Texas. It was really popular with cattle ranchers in the 60’s. It slowly spread and is now a pretty popular drink in most parts of Texas. In fact, you can even buy canned versions that are pretty darn delicious!

I’m going to share a recommended ratio in the recipe below, but feel free to play with it! You can add more (or less) tequila, add a splash of grapefruit, or salt the rim of the glass. This drink recipe is a really great base for a lot of creativity, so have fun with it. Jalapeno slices, some other citrus flavors, or other fruit for garnish would all add a lot of fun flavors.
